Journal — The Salon Files

Most curls are not badly grown. They are badly handled — cut on the wrong principle, dried in the wrong way, touched at the wrong moment. Curl is not difficult hair. It is precise hair.

There is a particular frustration that curly hair produces. It looks perfect one morning and shapeless the next, with nothing obviously different in between. People blame their hair — too much frizz, not enough definition, a curl that "won't behave." Almost always, the hair is fine. What changed was the handling.

Curly and wavy hair behaves differently from straight hair at every stage — how it is cut, how it holds water, how it dries, how it survives a night on a pillow. A straight-hair routine applied to curls fails not because the products are wrong, but because the method is. And method is exactly what a salon that works with curls every day accumulates: a set of small, unglamorous rules that, followed together, are the difference between a good curl day and a flat one.

Here is how we think about it — the cut, the dry, and the keeping. None of it is complicated. All of it matters.

01 — The Cut

Why curls are cut

DRY CUT — SPRING — BALANCE

The biggest mistake with curly hair happens before any product touches it: the cut. Curly hair should almost never be cut the way straight hair is — stretched wet, sectioned, cut to a flat line. A curl springs up when it dries. A length that looks correct when wet will sit centimetres shorter, in a completely different shape, once the curl contracts.

This is why we cut curly hair the way it lives: often dry, curl by curl, each spiral assessed on its own. The goal is not a line — it is balance: weight removed where a curl is heavy and collapsing, length kept where a curl needs to stack and support the one below it.

The practical consequence for you: a curl cut is a different appointment. It takes longer, it is done mostly dry, and it should look "unfinished" by straight-hair logic — because it is finished by curl logic. If a stylist stretches your curls flat and cuts a blunt line, the shape will only ever be right for the ten minutes before it dries.

The rule. A curl reveals its true length only when dry. Cut it dry, curl by curl, and build a shape that works with the spring — not against it. Never judge a curly cut while the hair is wet and stretched.

02 — The Dry

The moment
frizz is decided

SOAKING — SCRUNCH — CAST

If the cut decides the shape, the dry decides the finish. Apply product to soaking-wet hair, not damp. Curl creams and gels need water to distribute and to "cast" the curl. On half-dry hair, product sits on the surface and the curl sets without definition. Work it in dripping, scrunching upward toward the scalp.

Then stop touching it. Every time a drying curl is touched or separated, the cuticle is disturbed and the curl frizzes. Air-dry, or diffuse on low speed and low heat, cupping the curls toward the head rather than blasting them.

Two salon details make the difference. Plopping — wrapping product-soaked hair in a soft cotton t-shirt or microfibre for a few minutes — removes excess water without a towel roughing up the cuticle. And the cast: when curls dry with gel they form a slightly crunchy shell. Do not panic and do not touch it while damp. Once fully dry, "scrunch out the crunch" with a few drops of oil in the palms — the cast breaks, and underneath is a defined, soft, frizz-free curl.

The rule. Product on soaking hair, scrunch upward, then do not touch. Diffuse on low or air-dry. Break the gel cast only when the hair is completely dry. Touching a drying curl is the single biggest cause of frizz.

03 — The Keeping

Day two.
Day three.

A good curl day is not a one-off. The real secret of people whose curls always look intentional is maintenance: making one wash last three or four days, refreshing rather than restarting.

Protect the curl at night. The friction of hair against a cotton pillowcase over eight hours flattens and frizzes the curl. Either sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or gather the hair into a loose high "pineapple" on top of the head — up and out of the way of the pillow.

Refresh, don't rewash. Washing curly hair every day strips it and, paradoxically, produces more frizz. On day two and three, lightly dampen with a refresh spray, reshape the curls that have loosened, and let them dry again — the pattern is restored without the full ritual.

Deep-nourish weekly. Curly hair is structurally drier: the bends in the fibre make it harder for the scalp's oils to travel down the length. This is why a weekly nourishing mask is not a luxury for curls but a structural necessity. A well-nourished curl is a defined curl.

"Curl is not difficult hair.
It is precise hair. Get the
method right and it does
the work itself."

The Selection

Three for
the ritual

Curls do not need to be tamed. They need to be understood — cut as they spring, dried without interference, kept with a little nightly care. The hair was never the problem. The method is the whole thing.
